Lesson One Plan

  • Timing: 55 minutes
  • Use this alongside the prepared PowerPoint presentation
  • Please note: Before each lesson you may want to print copies of Slide 5 of the presentation. The students can use these handouts during paired work, so make sure you make enough copies for them to share one between two.

Lesson Introduction
Slides 1-3, (5 mins) 0-5 minutes (Listening Exercise)
  1. General introduction to the lesson/structure of the two lessons on this topic
  2. Go through each of the learning objectives for the lesson
  3. Play video which gives students a general introduction to what we will be discussing
  4. Depending on the English ability of the class, you can use English or Spanish subtitles to improve confidence and understanding

Vocabulary Builder
Slide 4, (10 mins.) 5-15 mins (Speaking, Listening, Reading)
  1. Go through key vocabulary for these lessons which is useful when discussing art
  2. Get different students read aloud the definitions (drill vocabulary)
  3. Get all students to repeat each word and write each word down in a list (this will be useful for an upcoming activity)
  4. Introduction to Artworks

Image Set One
Slide 5, (5 mins.)15-22 minutes (Speaking, Listening)
  1. Get students to look at the artworks in Image Set 1, presented without titles or other information
  2. Lead class discussion answering following questions:
  3. What is similar about these images? What is the theme? Parents and children, mothers, care etc…
  4. What emotions do you feel when you look at these images? Care, protection, love etc…

How to Become an Art Detective

Slide 6-7, (5 mins), 22-27 mins (Speaking, Listening)
  1. Explain to students that looking at art is about picking up on clues the artist has left
  2. Explain that everything in an artwork is intentional and put in the artwork for a reason
  3. We can become art detectives to help work out why the artist has created the piece and what we can feel
  4. Explain that with art there is usually not one ‘answer’ but many emotions/understandings that can be communicated through art
  5. Lead quick discussion with class, prompting them to develop a list of things to do when looking at art, prompt them to develop of questions including:
  6. Look at the clues - what is the main ‘thing’ depicted in the artwork? What is the image ‘of?’ What else is included in the artwork? Are there any other things or items that are clues?
  7. How was the artwork made? What might the artist want to communicate through their choice of style, technique and materials?
  8. Who is the artist? When did they live? What did they experience? How might this affect our understanding?

Critical Engagement with Artworks
Slide 6,7,8 (2 mins. per slide, ~6 mins in total) 27-33 minutes (Listening)
  1. Introduce first artwork to students
  2. Explain that you will show each of the artworks, information about the artworks and some questions about them that they can use for the next activity
  3. Describe the images to the students - what form is the artwork?, how was it made?, what techniques were used etc

Writing and Discussion Exercise
Slide 9 (15 mins.) 33-48 minutes (Speaking, Writing)
  1. Students will work with their partner/person next to them to create 3 mind maps on the following questions:
  2. How are these images similar to each other?
  3. How are these images different to each other?
  4. What ideas and emotions are the artists communicating? What are they trying to say through their artwork?
  5. Remind them to use the key vocabulary they learnt earlier
  6. If you would like, print out Slide 5 (with all of the images on it) and go back to the key vocabulary slide during the activity so students can refer to it as they work

Feedback
Slide 10 (5 mins) 48-53 minutes (Speaking)
  1. Make 3 mind maps on the blackboard (do this during previous activity)
  2. Ask pairs to feedback what they wrote during previous activity and add these answers to mind maps on the board

Homework
Slide 11-12 (2 mins) 53-55 minutes
  1. Explain homework - students need to produce a quick drawing/sketch based on the artworks seen in the lesson and the discussions they had
  2. Homework task: time yourself for 15 minutes and do a quick drawing/sketch based on the artworks seen in the lesson and the discussions you had, due for the next lesson
  3. Round up lesson, thank students.
